The History of Incense
The Culture of Incense Through Ages
Incense culture spans several thousand years in China. As early as the Neolithic age, people burned mugwort and herbs to honour heaven and their ancestors, believing incense to be the medium between the human and the divine. As the Silk Road opened and new aromatics arrived, nobility used incense to scent their robes and rooms and to dispel impurity—incense stepped from the altar into daily life. The Huangdi's Internal Classics records that "Fragrance is the essence of breath", a formless remedy.
After year 605, incense began to find its way into households across the land. People would wear or burn incense while reading, playing music, or entertaining guests. Its golden age began after year 960, when scholars placed incense on ashes or porcelain shards and heated these third-party media to burn the incense. They did not pursue thick smoke, but rather wisps of azure smoke, through which they found inner peace. Incense had become a carrier for healing the soul.
